The School is Cool after-school program is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Broward in partnership with eight local nonprofit organizations. The Crockett Foundation is an active participant in the program and has partnered with Margate Middle School as its beneficiary.
The Community Foundation of Broward describes School is Cool this way:
Only 53% of young people in America's 50 largest cities graduate from high school on time. Twenty-five U.S. school districts produce 1/5 of all U.S. dropouts. Broward is one of them. Research tells us that middle school is a fork in the road for school and graduation success or failure.
WHY IT MATTERS
When struggling middle schoolers become high school dropouts, they can expect higher unemployment and lower earnings; higher rates of illness and disability; and increased incarceration.
School is Cool aims to increase high school graduation rates to 90% by focusing on middle school success.
School is Cool centers around the ABC’s concept (attendance, behavior, and course performance) of reading and math. For its implementation of the curriculum, the Crockett Foundation is providing students with tablet computers (such as iPads) purchased by the foundation to aid learning via technology.
Peer tutoring is heavily emphasized in this program. High school volunteers, college interns, and teachers meet one-on-one with students to help them with math and reading. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded their own tablet and are encouraged to continue reading year-round.
The Crockett Foundation’s partnership with Margate Middle School serves around 50 students.
